Letter from the Vicar

Dear Friends

In the course of the recent Parish Visitation, many people commented on the enormous contribution made by our two Readers, John Upton and Keith Trutzenbach in the life of St Augustine's Slade Green. As part of my late night/early morning reading, I have been looking at the Register of Services, only to discover that both of these men have clearly ministered in the parish in a way that is far beyond the usual level of Ministry exercised by Readers in the Church of England. Although both Keith and John in the last 3-4 Months have been taking a well deserved rest, it is only right that in response to a corporate length of ministry spanning 37 years, a significant proportion of which has been given to St Augustine's Slade Green, that the Parish should have the opportunity to say "Thank You" to them both.

On Sunday 3rd October at 5.00pm, there will be a Special Service of Evensong followed by Benediction, so that we can have the opportunity to thank God for the ministries of John and Keith, and to pray for his continued Blessing upon them. After the service we will adjourn to the Church Hall for refreshments. So that we can show our appreciation by making a presentation to them both. If you would like to contribute towards their gifts please feel most welcome to give your contribution either to me, or one of the Church Wardens. Also on the day itself if you are coming and could bring with you a small plate of food for all to share this would be most appreciated (particularly as I am not a good cook).

Please remember both John and Keith in your prayers, and if at all possible make every effort to support them on this special day in their lives, and in the life of our Church.

I am also aware that during the month of October, Jennie Jones will be celebrating her 45th Anniversary as a member of our Church Choir. On a personal note I have been very grateful to Jennie for all that she has taught me about St Augustine's in the past. Jennie has also been the secretary of the Parochial Church Council (PCC) for many years, and many members speak very highly of the contribution she has made.

I am proposing therefore to make a presentation to Jennie during Evensong on Sunday 10th October. This will be a prelude to her 50th Anniversary of Service in five years time, when I hope there will be a very special Evensong and Social Gathering in thanksgiving. Long may she continue to sing in the Choir, support the P.C.C as secretary, and advise (in a very sensitive way) the Clergy as to how things have been done in the past. I would also pay tribute to her work within the uniformed organisations, which I still have the privilege of learning more about.

Please let me know about important anniversaries or celebrations. I hope in the very near future to publish an interview in our parish magazine with a very loyal Parishioner who has worshipped in Saint Augustine's for 70 years, and has a wealth of interesting and very valuable experience - watch this space.

Finally, I would like to pay tribute to those who have supported the Daily Eucharist in our Church. The Eucharist lies at the very heart of our Church's life and despite what people may think or tell you it is our most important service.

I remain your sincere friend and priest
. Neil Bunker
