Frost, Fine or Fog?

February can give us all kinds of weather and events, so writing a magazine article before the month begins can mean missing some major event which is about to happen. Just last year, our radio’s, TV’s and newspapers were bringing us constant coverage of how quickly and generously the nation was responding to the tragedy of the tsunami, and how soon after they were reporting the help being given closer to home, in Cumbria and Scotland, during the floods in those areas. Good and generous actions have many different motivations, but all begin with the good inspiration of the Holy Spirit, showing us God’s loving concern and presence even in a world which sometimes seems to shake around us.

Would you like to think, talk and pray more about how God responds to his creation and takes responsibility for it? If so, the prayer group which will be starting at the beginning of Lent is for you. It will be a helpful way of remembering that our conversations with God are not just for Sunday mornings, but should continue throughout the week as we thank him for the happy events in our lives and talk to him about the help we need, too. To join in this friendly and supportive informal gathering, ask me for more details.

The Sunday before February 2nd is Candlemas Sunday celebrating the infant Jesus being presented to God in the temple in Jerusalem, and Simeon proclaiming him a “light to lighten the Gentiles”. We have chosen this afternoon for our Christingle celebration, which is a sure favourite for the youngsters. Another opportunity to remember the importance of the younger members of our community will be on the 19th of February during the 10.30 am Eucharist when we will be baptising two sisters, making them fellow members with us in the body of Christ and welcoming them into the Church family.
