From the Vicarage

The August Month

From wails about the winter weather, voices have turned to sing the praises of summertime. At last we are warm - don’t let anyone say we’re too hot - and the evenings are long and light.

At times like this it seems unnecessary to think about the church’s heating and lighting, but we can do so with the happy anticipation that next winter will be much warmer in St. Augustine’s. Thanks to the generosity of our own congregation, many local people, several local firms and businesses, our Diocese of Rochester, Landfill Tax credit funding from the Waste Recycling Group administered by WREN and many others (including the contractors, Christopher Dunphy Ecclesiastical Ltd, who have kept their inflation increase creditably low) we expect to have the work on the heating system started, and probably finished, before Christmas. The names of individual donors to whom we owe our thanks will be published in this magazine soon.

Once the new heating boiler and radiators have been installed there will no longer be any need for the ineffective overhead heaters - except as auxiliary lighting ! When they are removed we hope to use their wiring for new lights, which will also be quite expensive, so our funding appeal is now turning from heat to light. Scientists say that heat and light are signs of energy, and we certainly want to thank all those whose energy has/is contributing to the success of these projects.

As I write our treasurer is recovering from an operation - get well soon Margaret - and our two erstwhile former churchwardens are each recovering from falls (no, they weren’t partying together) - hope you’re feeling hale and hearty again soon, June and Grace. We offer our prayers and best wishes for everyone who is unwell, and look forward to seeing each of you within the Church family again soon.

With every blessing,

Ann
