From the VicarageRemember NovemberExploding fireworks seems to be a strange way to mark the deeds of a would-be assassin, but Guy Fawkes has met his end on many a bonfire since he hatched the Gunpowder Plot. Properly handled, fireworks can be great fun, and St. Augustine’s social committee are organising a firework party on Sunday 4th November, starting at 6 pm in the church car park. For those who remember the explosions in the trenches or the blitz during the world wars, Remembrance Sunday is a solemn occasion. On Sunday, 11th November, as last year, our 10.30 am Eucharist will include two minutes’ silence at the War Memorial in the churchyard at 11am, a commemoration of those who have suffered as a result of war and prayers for lasting peace. Real peace must include peace in our hearts, and that can only come through the grace of the Holy Spirit showing us God as our Father in heaven and Jesus his Son as our Saviour and Friend. This faith has been handed down to us by many brave Christians and on 1st November at 3pm we celebrate All Saints Day, giving thanks for the faithful whose names are known to us. This month also marks the launch of Stewardship for the parish of Slade Green. All who are Christian are asked to consider how much God has done for them and what they are doing in return. As we approach Advent and prepare ourselves again for the coming of Christ, the sincerity of our gratitude to God may be judged by the degree of our support for the work and worship of God’s Church. Pray for the parish and its people, and remember that giving to God should not be on the level of ‘a penny for the Guy’ but in response to God’s generosity in giving us the glory of this beautiful world.
With every blessing, Ann
