The Season of Trinity

England’s beautiful, green summer season has started (never mind the rain – it wouldn’t be England without it). In the Church, the season is green, too, with vestments and altar frontals showing that same glorious colour of creation.

No matter how the world came about in history, God the holy Trinity was behind it. It could be thought of as God the Father conceiving the plan for a garden, God’s Son, Jesus, working as the gardener, and God’s Holy Spirit being the wind, rain and sun which are all necessary for plants to grow. With the three working as one the result was perfect, but some of us, the plants, have jostled one another and spoilt the plan, so God is still working to show us how to grow straight and tall, flowering and bearing fruit.

If you enjoy working in a garden, you’ll know that simply pulling out the weeds only leaves barren, brown earth that soon needs weeding again, but encouraging the good plants leaves less room for the weeds to grow. Perhaps that is why God doesn’t simply remove every sinner from the earth and leave it empty – instead he encourages us to remove our sins and to fill ourselves and our world with the beauty of good thoughts and actions.

Come and join us in St. Augustine’s Church on Sunday mornings at 10.30 am. Each service contains a confession – an admission to God that we are sometimes a bit like weeds – and the absolution, which is God’s promise that if we really wish to become like beautiful plants he will help us, and we also have readings and teaching about God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit to help us to recognise the real plan for God’s garden and to be part of it.

With every blessing,

Ann
